To determine upload speeds, the app sends information back to the server. The server then sends data to your device, and the app measures how much information is downloaded in a certain amount of time. When you launch a speed test, your device sends a signal or ping to the nearest test server to initiate the test. The speed can vary depending on the time of day or where you are in your home if you’re relying on cellular internet connection or WiFi. A speed test only calculates your internet speed at a given time. Upload and download speeds are measured in Mbps, or megabits per second. Use this measurement to see how quickly information sent from your device reaches the internet. This is important when making video calls, sending documents, or backing up files to the cloud.
“It was a pay to show up situation, it wasn’t long term. “When I retired, it was interesting,” he says. Moving out of tennis proved to be a powerful choice for Roddick. “Real estate has provided that we can be patient,” he says. That said, the real estate foundation allows him to remain choosy. Of course, his competitive side kicks in and sometimes takes on a deal they don’t want in on, always hoping to show them he was right in the end. It is small enough you are one phone call away from getting an answer or talking directly with someone versus just scheduling a meeting.”Īs Roddick vets new ideas, he leans heavily on Decker and Myers, with 80 percent of his deals including all three of them. “Austin is small enough you normally hear about things in your business network and get a look. “It certainly has been a beneficial place to have lived over the last 15 years with capital,” he says. Sometimes Roddick hears about a new deal through his personal network and other times it comes from living in Austin for the past 15 years. Investing in companies, I want to sit down in the room and completely believe in the person I am hearing a pitch from.” It is a little bit of the opposite of real estate, which is extremely disciplined with a formula we stick to and everything understandable on a piece of paper. “You have to invest in what is going on, retail to infrastructure. “If it was investing in just one of these companies, it would be extremely risky,” he says. Roddick has built his portfolio to 17 current companies he’s invested in - others have been acquired since his initial investments - but isn’t worried about hitting a certain number. “Investing in companies is more exciting day to day.” “The fun part for me is looking at the deals and new companies,” he says. With the real estate side of the business so formulaic and Roddick retiring from the game in 2012, he continued to leverage his business learning into new deals, startup spaces, series Cs and more. Roger Federer and Andy Roddick together in Austin, Texas. “Andy knew that he would rather have the $3 million available to give to his family, community and charities.” “I know that Andy recognized that the $300,000 that he could have spent on a new Ferrari would lessen his net worth by over $1.4 million when he reached 55 and $3 million by 65,” Myers says. Starting in real estate helped keep Roddick grounded early and not divert money to subsidize personal spending. Then 10 years later properties have obtained value on their own and contracts create a head of steam.” The philosophy, so vastly different than the hope of investing in a company that gets acquired within three years, was key for the young player. When you make a hard push at age 23 or 24, it is slow at first. “We have acquired a sizable number of assets and have predicable cash flow, what we live off. “It is not a business that is going to go 10x in one year,” Roddick says about the real estate. “The athlete that reacts to this early earning cycle needs to have a long-term view on business investment if he or she wants tomorrow to be better than today.” Myers says Andy recognized early in his career the principles of diversification, compound earning and not living extravagantly, leading to Roddick mixing his assets into 40 percent triple-net long-term leased commercial real estate, 25 percent listed equities, 15 percent in venture efforts, 10 percent professionally managed hedge funds and 10 percent in guaranteed tax-deferred investments. “Most professional athletes are expected to reap their paydays during their playing years,” Myers says. They were at the right place in the right time, taking advantage of the 2008 recession to “press forward and acquire our first bunch of buildings.” With such a rigid, long-term view, Roddick was able to stay disciplined and turn investing into numbers on a sheet. The duo created a triple-net lease real estate business, based on strict formulas and numbers. It was then that Roddick and business partner Phil Myers created the foundation for Roddick’s post-athletics stronghold: real estate. When I retired the income from playing was replaced by whatever I was doing afterwards.”Ī few behind the scenes shots from our shoot with and Such an incredible team! We can't wait to show you the finished product. “I became obsessed with the idea of working while I was playing to replace my (tennis) income. “It is, ‘what’s next, how do we make money work for me?’” he says about his thinking at the time. The big-serving star had his big shoe and clothing deal locked in and with his early success, endorsement deals were three, four and five years in length. For Roddick, his entry into business outside tennis started when he was around 21, already near the top of his sport. Dealers can choose to sell cars for higher or lower than the MSRP, but most buyers negotiate with dealers to get them to sell for less than the MSRP to minimize their costs as much as possible. It is different than the price the dealer paid the manufacturer for the car, which is the invoice price. MSRP, or manufacturer’s suggested retail price, is the retail price for which the manufacturer suggests a dealer sell a car. These stickers must include certain information about the vehicle in these six areas: Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price law requires a window sticker, known as a Monroney label, to be displayed on all new cars. The sticker also documents the list of original accessories that came with the vehicle if you eventually sell it. It’s a good idea to keep copies of the sticker in the glove box for reference, as when future repairs are needed and specific parts are required. The window sticker also provides a valuable historical record. The window sticker lets you know exactly what’s included with any particular new car, as well as helping to ensure that you’re getting the exact options you’re paying for. The sticker on the window is a rich source of essential information about a new automobile. When you’re shopping for a new car from a dealer, the car window is the first place you should look on any vehicle for a lot of important information. Glancing at the window provides you with most of the information you need to know about any new vehicle. If you are in the market for a new car, the window is one of the most important places to look. All of these statistics officially identify the car or truck for shoppers on a dealer’s showroom floor. Each vehicle also has a vehicle identification number on its window sticker. Information on the window sticker verifies its make, model and year and provides its suggested retail price - thus, its “sticker price” - and a comprehensive list of its standard and optional equipment. This way, your boa can move back and forth between the different temperatures depending on its needs. All the heat elements should be on one side and the other will then be the cool side. This essentially means you need to provide a hot and a cool side to your enclosure. Like all reptiles, they are dependent on external thermoregulation to control their body temperature. Guyanas originate from a warm climate and so they like it fairly warm. Newspaper is also acceptable, though it doesn’t look as nice and you have to change it all out when they defecate on it. Zoo Meds wipe out or vinegar and water both work well for cage cleaning. Disinfect the enclosure and change out the bedding at that time. You should only need to clean the whole thing out about once a month or so. Spot clean the bedding whenever they defecate. The ones that look the best and help hold some humidity are Zoo Med repti bark, Zilla jungle mix, Zoo Med eco earth, and Zoo Med forest floor. You can use many types of bedding for your Guyana boa. We do not recommend low rack systems for boas as they like to climb and explore. A 6’ x 3' is a good basic size, though, many people have gone larger and have gotten quite creative with their enclosures. For an adult boa, you will want a custom enclosure or one of the large 6+ foot molded plastic reptile cages. A shy boa baby will feel more secure if there is a hide for them on the cool side and the warm side of the enclosure (more about that in the heating section). If you use a glass tank, you will want to provide a humid hide-that is a hide that has some damp moss in it for extra humidity. For yearlings, step up to an enclosure that is at least 30" x 12" inches (like Zilla critter cage 20 Long) or go bigger like a 36" x 18" (Exo Terra Large, or Zilla 40 gal). There are several kinds that work well for Guyanas, e.g., glass aquariums and any of the commercially available plastic-type reptile cages. At around a year old, you can increase the size of the enclosure. You can start babies in cages as small as 10 gallons. So they will like some height to their enclosure. In the wild, they live on the ground but also in trees. An early observer of TV's growing involvement in political affairs was author Joe McGinness. With its visual dimension, television magnifies the connection radio created. The nation listened, and FDR gave voice, authoritatively and compassionately, to problems Americans faced in their lives and homes. If a candidate seems to a viewer to be in command and wears well, an emotional connection develops, and that bond can prove significant in the voting booth.īefore television, Franklin Roosevelt's mastery of radio in his "fireside chats" staked out the living room as a place politicians could go to establish a direct rapport with the citizenry. The trick in cultivating a successfully telegenic "image" involves marrying personal traits - the authentic self - with qualities that make one engaging or appealing. Television creates a sense of intimacy between candidate and voter, and the political figure hopes to become a regular guest in the collective American household for the campaign season - and the next four years. Portraying oneself as a comfortably likable person is essential. The "living-room factor" means someone campaigning for president needs to conform to the medium's theatrical values. But those messages, by and large, come to us via our TV sets from candidates as concerned with how they dramatize themselves and their cause as with any wonkish prospectus or 12-point plan. Textbooks might describe national campaigns as contests of ideas, competing policies, and proposals charting the country's future. To a certain degree, the road to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue goes through your residence. Arlen called Vietnam the "living-room war." Today, because of television, the "living-room factor" plays an increasingly significant role in presidential politics. Between news reports, interview programs, talk shows, chats with late-night comics, and commercials, candidates are now unavoidable as they occupy our screens and seek our support.īack in 1969, writer Michael J. Television made White House aspirants guests - invited or not - in our households, and they began dropping by at all hours. When television became the principal tool for political communication, seekers of the presidency confronted a new challenge: They had to present themselves not only as plausible leaders of a world superpower, but also as visitors Americans would welcome in their homes. Since Lunas don't have mouths, they derive energy from the stored fats from larval stage. Once the wings are dry, the moth flies off in search of a mate, as the sole purpose of an adult Luna moth is to make more Luna moths. At this stage, the Luna moth needs to wait 2 to 3 hours for its wings to dry and harden before it can fly. During the first few hours, this hemolymph is pumped to different parts of the body, including the wings. This is due to the accumulation of hemolymph (insect blood) in its belly. When the winged Luna moth emerges from the cocoon its abdomen will be swollen. Apart from this, there are chitinous spurs in their forewings used to make holes in the cocoon through which the adult Luna moth emerges. When it's time for the pupae to come out, it releases a protein-digesting enzyme that weakens the silk threads. During winter seasons the pupa may enter a state of dormancy and can take up to 9 months for it to come out of the cocoon as an adult Luna moth. Under normal weather conditions, the pupal phase can take around 2 weeks. The days spent in the pupal phase depend on environmental conditions. If you've ever seen a Luna moth cocoon you may have felt movement inside the cocoon. This is the most active stage of a Luna moth in its entire life cycle. The pupal phase begins after the 5th instar, in which the larvae begins to spin a cocoon made of thin single-stranded silk. Larvae stay on the same tree where they hatched until it is time to descend to the ground to make a cocoon, or pupate. With each molt, they leave their old exoskeleton behind which they may consume. After each instar a small amount of silk is placed on a major vein of the leaf. Depending upon the availability of food and climate, each instar may take anywhere between 4 to 10 days. Which is why the larvae keep on eating without taking a break. The energy needed during the adult stage is stored in the form of fat during the larval stage. The adult Luna moth does not have a mouth and so it does not eat anything during the 10 days that it lives. The larval stage can be considered the most important part of the Luna moth’s entire life. The larva that emerge from eggs go through 5 instars before they're ready to pupate-an instar is the phase between two periods of molting in the development of an insect larva or other invertebrate animal. Egg laying starts the evening after mating is completed and goes on for several days. It all starts with an egg that hatches after 10 to 12 days-females lay between 200 & 400 eggs, singly or in small groups, on the underside of leaves of tree species preferred by the larvae. Similar to other members of the giant silkworm moth family, Luna moths undergo 4 stages of metamorphosis: Egg, Larva, Pupa, & Moth. These magnificent creatures can live less than 10 days as a winged adult after taking up to 12 months for metamorphosis. Luna moths belong to the family of giant silkworm moths called Saturniidae. With their beautiful bright green wings and super short lifespans, they're somewhat of a mystery. |
